Electric Thawing Service Limitations

Thawing water lines using electric thawing methods can be dangerous and has the potential to start a house fire in the house being thawed as well as other houses nearby in some cases if the proper precautions are not taken. Due to these as well as other risks, Northern Utility Services has implemented the following policies in regards to thawing water service lines:

We will NOT electrically thaw a service if we can not verify electrical continuity between the water service in the home and the Well/Keybox/ThawWire.
We will NOT electrically thaw under a mobile home unless the underground water service is frozen.
We will NOT electrically thaw under a mobile home unless the water service can be fully disconnected from the trailer plumbing.
We may STOP using electrical thawing methods at any time at the discretion of the NUS thawing personnel on site.

Other Limitations

In addition to the above limitations, NUS has the following policies regarding water line thawing.

We will NOT thaw interior plumbing.
We will NOT thaw under a mobile home unless the customer has already opened up the skirting within 10ft of the water service before NUS Thawing Personnel arrive. If NUS Personnel arrive and the skirting has not been removed, the thaw will not be completed and the customer’s deposit will be forfeit.
We will NOT close up the skirting for a mobile home after the thaw is completed. Opening and closing the skirting for access to the water service is entirely the responsibility of the customer.
We WILL charge our standard thawing hourly rate for any time spent digging out and exposing keyboxes (the water shutoff out in the yard or driveway) or well heads. You can help reduce the cost if these are already exposed and have a walkable path to reach them when NUS personnel arrive.

Jetter Thawing

Because we understand that it is important to you to get water service restored, in the case that we do not feel it is safe to thaw your water service using electrical thawing methods, we have developed our own jetter thawing system that is much safer.

The jetter thawing method, however, does require us to cut into your plumbing where the water service enters your home, and circulate heated water through a small tube that is sent down the inside of the frozen pipe, and therefore, thawing a water service using the jetter thawing method takes more effort to set up and can take longer to thaw the line overall.

Thawing Limitations Agreement *

I have read and understood the above thawing service limitations and agree to them in their entirety

Non Refundable Service Deposit Agreement *

I understand that I will need to pay a $158 non refundable service deposit before an NUS service technician can be scheduled to complete any locates, leak detections, or thawing projects.

Locate Accuracy Agreement *

I understand that NUS can only guarantee accuracy to within 36in on either side of the marks for water and sewer lines, or within 24in on either side of the marks for all other utilities. NUS is not responsible for any damage to located utilities if the line was within the 36in or 24in tolerance zone.

Hand Dig Policy *

I understand that if I do need to dig within 3ft of the marks, I should either hand dig or use vacuum excavation to avoid damaging the utilities.

Utility Worker Access *

I understand that a utility worker may need to access fenced in areas of my yard to complete the locate, and will provide access if needed

Shutoff Acessability *

I understand that the acoustic leak detection technician will need access to both the water shutoff inside the facility as well as the shutoff out near the street (or the well casing if the facility is served by a private well). If either shutoff is not accessible I will need to have it made accessible before a leak detection can be scheduled.

Leak Detection Limitations *

I understand variables such as unexpected pipe materials/sizes, line locations, and background noise can adversely affect the accuracy of acoustic leak detection results. I understand these risks and agree to pay for the leak detection service even in the unlikely event that the leak detection result is inaccurate.

Non-Refundable Deposit *

I understand that NUS requires a deposit equal to 25% of the estimated cost of the project to be paid upfront before the project can be officially scheduled and work started, unless I choose to finance the project through NUS.

Estimate Details *

I understand that the estimate will be based on the evaluation of NUS and will not include material price increases or additional labor, materials, or equipment which may be required should unforseen problems or adverse weather conditions arise after the work has begun.
